Metro Mass clarifies 100-bus fleet designed for intercity operations

Metro Mass Transit Limited has clarified that the 100 buses recently commissioned by the government are primarily designated for intercity transport services across Ghana, rather than being deployed specifically to ease transportation challenges within Accra.

This clarification follows ongoing public debate over persistent commuting difficulties in the capital, especially during peak hours, when many residents face challenges accessing transport to and from work, school, and other daily destinations.

Commuters in various parts of Accra have raised concerns about prolonged waiting times at bus stops, overcrowding in vehicles, and increasing transport fares, leading to public discussion over whether the newly commissioned buses would meaningfully reduce pressure on the city’s transport system.

Metro Mass Transit Limited, however, has stressed that expectations that the buses will solely resolve Accra’s transport challenges are misplaced. The company explained that the fleet is intended to enhance public transport services in several cities and municipalities across the country.

Speaking on the issue, the Head of Corporate Communications at Metro Mass Transit Limited, Mohammed Mubarak Watara, said the acquisition of the buses is part of a broader strategy to revitalise and reposition the state-owned transport operator.

He further noted that the procurement was carried out under a strategic initiative backed by the Presidency and the Ministry of Transport, aimed at strengthening Metro Mass Transit’s operations and expanding its capacity to serve passengers nationwide.

“The buses did not come because of intracity operations. It was an arrangement made by the current administration as part of efforts to reset Metro Mass through the directive and support of the Presidency and the Ministry of Transport. When Metro Mass started operating, it was solely focused on intercity services, not intracity services. People often mistake the operations of Aayalolo for those of Metro Mass. Aayalolo basically deals with intracity transport,” he said.
