 Iran fans face uncertainty after World Cup ticket allocation withdrawal

Iran’s football federation says its supporter-ticket allocation for the 2026 World Cup group stage has been revoked just days before the tournament starts. The move affects fans planning to follow Iran’s matches against New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt.

The federation said FIFA rules normally give each participating nation 8% of tickets for its matches, and it claims sales had already begun before it was told the tickets could no longer be issued. It argued that many supporters have already booked travel and accommodation based on that allocation.

In a strongly worded statement, the FFIRI said the decision was “contrary to the spirit of governing international competitions” and raised concerns about “non-sporting and political considerations” affecting the event. It also urged FIFA to uphold neutrality, fairness and established regulations.

Iran’s World Cup build-up has already been complicated by political and logistical issues. The team previously shifted its training base from Tucson to Tijuana, and reports say players may have to enter the United States only on matchdays before leaving again immediately after each game.

The ticket dispute adds another layer of uncertainty as Iran prepares for football’s biggest stage. With the tournament opening on Thursday, the controversy has pushed the off-field pressure on the team even higher.
